Our Story
Leanne VanOverbeke opened Knit & Spin in 2018 in Shelby and, in 2020, moved the shop to its current location in Montague. The shop not only survived COVID, it became a West Michigan lakeshore destination, especially for summer vacationers and seasonal shop-hoppers.
In March of 2025, the shop found new life under the ownership of Floyd Peplinski, a retired U.S. Army veteran and seasoned financial advisor. Floyd—known for his thoughtful approach and warm presence—stepped away from the financial world to pursue a passion project rooted in creativity and connection. Taking over Knit & Spin allowed him to channel his entrepreneurial spirit into a hands-on, community-focused business that brings people together through fiber arts.

What Makes Us Unique?
We have a vibrant community of skilled fiber-arts crafters, affectionately referred to as the Executive Yarn Council. These are experts in knitting, crocheting, spinning, weaving, felting, dyeing, and more. Many of our fiber artists offer free assistance for crafting questions, and some offer one-on-one consultation at a low cost.
Despite a wide variety of personalities, there is a very inclusive atmosphere in the shop, centered around our common interests and passions. Unlike other local yarn shops, where open crafting is available only during limited hours, we offer open crafting any time the shop is open at Knit & Spin.
We also offer a wide variety of classes and workshops, with beginner classes offered at least twice a year. Our inventory is large and carefully curated, featuring around 20 commercial brands of premium fibers to accommodate any crafting budget (with more brands to be added soon), as well as a broad selection of knitting needles, crochet hooks, free and low-cost patterns, books, notions, spinning wheels, and weaving looms.
We currently partner with 18 local crafters (with more artists to be featured soon) who sell their products in the shop through consignment and resale. Their offerings range from locally sourced, hand-dyed yarns and spinning fibers to hand-crafted bags, ceramic and wooden yarn bowls, and hand-knitted and hand-crocheted items.
We are blessed to have Grand Alpaca Company Farm and Fiber Mill located in our community, just a short drive from the shop! And, we are happy to partner with the newest student organization at Muskegon Community College, The Jayhawk Cozy Collective, a fiber arts club!
A Family-Run Fiber Studio
This isn’t a solo venture. Floyd proudly runs Knit & Spin alongside his son, Paul, and granddaughter, Astrid, turning the shop into not just a local business, but a true family affair. Together, they’ve created a space that blends small-town charm with expert-level service, where generations of crafters can gather, learn, and grow. Whether it’s helping customers find the perfect skein of yarn or hosting Thursday evening classes, the father–son duo keeps the shop buzzing with energy, creativity, and personal care.
